Terran Federation
The year is 2268.
The Terran Federation, or just the Federation, is an oppressive totalitarian regime.

The Federation was formed over 100 years before the current time. It was formed after almost half a century of wars between different various power blocs of Earth and large corporations which had pioneered colonisation of known space. Records of the period prior to the Federation are scarce, having been restricted or erased by the current regime.
Earth remains the capital of the foundation. Despite the devastating impacts of war and climate change, Earth remains the only know planet capable of natively sustaining human life.
Federation is commanded by the President of the High Council, below which is the Supreme Commander, who is in control of the military and Space Command.
The High Council has 8 members. The process of succession is unclear, and generally follows shifts in power. The members include powerful families who have led the Federation since its inception, and owners of the Mega Corporations which operate within the Federation.
Set against this is the stringently repressive regime the Federation has imposed off-world. Political activity opposed to the Federation is banned and atrocities are carried out against rebel groups.
There are organised crime syndicates within the Federation, although it is not clear whether these are independent, or led by high ranking Federation officials, or indeed part of the Federation itself.
Slavery is legal in at least some parts of the Federation and families of deserters from the military are routinely sold as slaves.
Federation law is strict and punishment severe.
Augments are one of the most extreme forms of brainwashing. The subject's mind is rebuilt completely so that their only desire is service to the Federation.
Religion of any form is banned under Federation law.
The Supreme Commander is appointed by the President, and leads the Federation military forces.
The Federation has the largest known single military force in the galaxy, although the mega corporations maintain their own security services. There are also mercenaries which are used by the Federation and the corporations.
